Frequently Asked Questions
How often do we vote on levies?
Using the traditional levy cycle, the Centralia School Board goes to the voters every two years with a levy proposal to maintain the quality of district educational programs.
What's the difference between a levy and a bond?
The easiest way to remember the difference is:
Levy = learning
Bond = building
Why run a levy?
The state provides additional funds to districts that pass local levies. Passage of the proposed maintenance and operations levy in February will assure the continuation of this funding source.
If assessed values increase, can the district collect more?
No, the total levy amounts collected in 2010-2011 cannot be exceeded, even if there are changes in assessed valuations.
Can the levy amount be increased without a vote?
No. By state law, voters must approve any levy increase with a 50% passage rate.
What if I am retired and on a fixed income?
Taxpayers who are 61 years of age or older and have an annual income of $35,000 or less can be exempt from this levy. Contact the Lewis County Assessor's Office at 740-1392 for further details.
How can I register to vote?
The deadline for registering or transferring your voter registration is 30 days before an election. If you register by mail, your application must be postmarked by the 30-day cutoff or it will not become effective until after the election.
If you are not already registered to vote in Washington and you miss the 30-day deadline, you can register in person at your county elections department until 15 days before the election. Register on-line here.
If you have any questions, please contact the Centralia School District at 360-330-7600.
